An island is great for adding countertop/prep space, storage, or an eating area to your kitchen and can be portable or built-in depending on the scope of your remodel. An island is completely customizable to your taste, style and needs. It can match existing cabinets and colors or have a totally different look which becomes a visual focal point as well as a gathering spot for family and guests.
Depending on the size of your kitchen an island will function differently. A larger island can accommodate a sink, stove, appliances, a larger countertop, electricity, storage and seating, becoming a multi-purpose space. But even if your kitchen is tight on square footage, some benefits of a smaller island are extra counter/prep space, cabinet and shelf storage.
