Kitchen Faucets: Style and Function

The best choice of a faucet for your kitchen is one that appeals to you stylistically and also functions well. Kitchen faucets are used often every day and should be durable enough to withstand years of use. That being said, the kitchen faucet is one of the final details that determines the overall look of your kitchen. It is important that it visually coordinates with the sink, countertop, backsplash, cabinets and hardware.

The style of your sink can play an important role when choosing a faucet. If holes are pre-drilled, the sink can determine the mounting style of your faucet; a single, double or triple hole faucet may be required. Esthetically the sink and faucet should balance each other, for example, you wouldn’t want a petite faucet over a large two or three bowl sink, or a large faucet over a smaller sink.

The basic features to look for in a kitchen faucet are style and finish. Some basic faucet styles are pull-out spout, single handle, double handle, wall mounted, pot filler, bridge, gooseneck, pull-down spout, touch activated and swivel spout. Each of these styles has features and advantages which will also help determine your choices. If you frequently fill larger pots with water or clean large objects, a gooseneck faucet works better because the spout comes up higher over the sink which makes more room for filling them. If space is limited, a single handle faucet might be a better choice. It requires only one hole, has one handle for both hot and cold and moves side to side. Whatever your kitchen lifestyle needs are there is a faucet that will accommodate them!

When choosing a finish for your faucet, there are trendy and traditional looks to consider. A popular trend is mixing metals such as brushed chrome cabinet hardware with a brushed gold faucet or a black faucet with brass cabinet hardware. Polished nickel, matte black, and bright metallics are other popular finishes. Some more traditional finishes include chrome, polished nickel, brushed nickel, bronze, oil-rubbed bronze, stainless steel, brass, copper and many others.
